The Top 5 Reasons You Should Be Coloring Today
By Nick P.
Yes, coloring books are all the rage these days. People seem to enjoy getting back in touch with their childhood, when it was a simpler time and all you had to do was stay in the lines with the color you were working with at the time.
But have you ever thought about how coloring books are helping you?
Here are the top 5 reasons that coloring books are helping you today, and why you should be coloring.
You’ll Work Through Your Issues
Carl Jung, famed psychotherapist, used to recommend coloring to his patients as part of therapy. He believed that coloring represented the “inner process by which individuals grow toward fulfilling their potential for wholeness.”
It’s interesting that coloring has been used therapeutically for many years, even centuries, but yet has only made a recent resurgence in the adult world.
You’ll Have More Focus
While coloring is not a demanding activity, it still requires you to focus on what you are doing, and what you are going to do next. That will blur out the outside world as you focus on coloring, enjoying what you are doing.
It also helps you to focus on the tasks you need to work on when you do return to the outside world, and have more clarity as you complete those tasks, as you are able to channel that attention back to your work.
It Helps Reduce Stress
Coloring can be so relaxing, and so enjoyable, because it takes us back to a simpler time, when we didn’t have deadlines or bills to pay. Coloring taps right into that time, and helps us to relax and enjoy coloring, which in turn helps to reduce stress.
In fact, some doctors are ‘prescribing’ coloring for those who work in high-stress jobs, and seeing those people have reduced hypertension, as well as being able to handle the stress better, and resolve issues with clarity.
Coloring Helps Spark Creativity
I can speak to this from personal experience. As I color, or create patterns for coloring, I find that I am much more creative in any project afterward. That creativity can help with problem-solving, or at the very least, make your world more colorful.
After doing a coloring ‘session’, as I like to call it, when my kids come to me with a challenge they are facing, I am able to help them find a solution that helps them to overcome the challenge.
Coloring Is Just Downright Fun!
Yes, if for no other reason that the above, coloring is fun! For me, it reminds me of a time when I was a child and sitting at the dining room table with my big box of crayons, coloring.
The beauty of coloring, other than it just being plain fun, is that you have something to show for it at the end of the project! It doesn’t have to be complicated, nor it doesn’t have to be simple. In the end, it just has to be you.
